English:
Note: I don’t pretend that I am qualified to
interpret Kyo’s words, but the English translation that came in the book
is, in my opinion, not just uncolloquial, but actually wrong. It is not
the translator’s job to interpret the poetry for the reader, but rather
to retain the sense of the words and their different levels of possible
meaning, leaving it for the reader to decide the meaning for themself. I
feel that the end of the poem, from the line ——White sickroom —— on,
(or rather, from the line after “but you……….,” in the original English)
is the translator’s interpretation, rather than just Kyo’s words.
Therefore, I re-translated from that line on, trying to keep the
vagueness and beauty of the words and not drawing from the beginning of
the poem for symmetry, as the original translator did. I’m no
professional, and my Japanese isn’t perfect, but I think it’s closer,
anyway, to what Kyo intended, if I can be so bold. My translation
follows the book’s.

Room 304, Spring and I
Cherry blossoms breezes from the window as always
Slowly slowly slowly slowly flutter in the air
Slowly slowly slowly slowly flutter in the air
Losing my consciousness also today
Everything reminds me of nothing
Taking my hands Holding them tight
Tears fell down upon your hands
Everything reminds me of nothing
Taking my hands Holding them tight
Tears fell down upon your hands
Who are you?
Melting into tears with out stopping Your eyes were telling me
familiar scent was carried off by the breeze of a spring
Maybe I’m going to pass away alone in this room
Maybe I’m going to pass away alone in this room
The flower nobody can find, but you……….
Flowers rush into falling swung by the wind White sickroom blown by the wind
I remembered my precious one at last
Am I going to become ash and return into sand tomorrow?
Cherry blossoms out side the window I want to sleep under that cherry tree at the end
Am I going to become ash and return into sand tomorrow?
Cherry blossoms out side the window I want to sleep under that cherry tree at the end
From now on I’m going to remember you swung by the wind with cherry blossoms
Slowly slowly slowly slowly flutter in the air
(This is mine):
——White sickroom ——
Tomorrow, Turning to ashes, turning to sand, I want to sleep under that cherry tree
At the moment of death, I wish for peace at any price
One petal, The petal of that petal’s life, The petal’s tears fluttering in the wind
At the moment of death, I wish for peace at any price
One petal, The petal of that petal’s life, The petal’s tears fluttering in the wind
Tonight, the sakura petals flutter and quickly scatter
